kde sound

I am not receiving any sounds from kde, no boot up/splash sounds etc. though I'm getting sound for all my applications (mplayer, xmms, line) but not for the kde system stuff. I'm assuming I should have used a specific flag when compiling kde originally. Don't know....

Let me know what information you would like.

Try using the -arts flag, and using the alsa flag if your sound card is ALSA.

Wow that was a fast reply (5 min). So should I do "USE="arts" emerge kde"? That will take some time or can I re-emerge just a portion of kde? The "alsa" flag is already set in make.conf. Thanks.

Any of the packages that have the "arts" use flag will be recompiled with arts enabled (along with the arts package itself), which IIRC is pretty much every KDE package :wink:

Anyway if I'm not mistaken, which I wouldn't be surprised if I were, ALSA can be used as a sound server but needs config files and wrappers for just about every program that is out there (until the next major milestone release)... where as Arts is a fairly wide used server, especially for KDE programs. There are many other options out there, but as far as I know if you want the low-level sounds for KDE to work (like when it starts up) you're pretty much stuck with Arts for that one.

It's a fairly minor point for me as sounds work fine for anything I use practically. The kde stuff is just decoration for the most part. I'll re-emerge anyway just to cator to the "a-type" part of my personality!

Yes if you want to use arts you would have to recompile basically the whole of KDE.

However since 3.5.?? we don't need arts anymore in KDE to play sounds.
In the KDE control panel under "Sound & Multimedia" choose "system notifications"
In the bottom right corner you have "player settings" and one of these settings
is for setting an external app (mplayer, pico-xine ...) to play the sound.
