I just recently reinstalled my box with gentoo after dabbling in FreeBSD with a little Windows and Ubuntu on the side, so i'm not just clicking the wrong buttons =P
Setup:
2.6.20 amd64(Core2Duo)
Fresh XFCE 4.4 with Thunar for file managment.
Other assorted applications =P
My problem is that from applications like Azureus and Firefox non of the default file associations work. That is to say that when i download a "zip" in firefox, right-clicking on the finished file and selecting "Open" does absolutely nothing. This is the same for azurues and goes as far as neither being able to "Open Containing Directory". All of these associations work find in Thunar, and as far as i can tell are set up as per-spec in /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache.
Can anybody shed some light on this?
Thanks, Novae.

The problem is that firefox for example does not use the system mime db.
Here is a nice post on that matter:

Unfortunately there seems to be no solution to that.
EDIT: I just found out that FF apparently uses gnome's mime db if available...

Yep, it seems you must have libgnome and gnome-mime-data installed for firefox mime associations to work correctly. Pitty, i had been hopeing i could get away with an xfce desktop with my favorite apps without any bloat from kde or gnome. |
