I'm trying to convince a friend to not switch from Ubuntu which he just installed to Vista but he wants to play games and thinks Linux is too much work. I told him that there was steam for linux because there was this package which says it's a CLIENT it is not, there is no client so why is this mislabeled? _________________ Joe Mulloy | http://twitter.com/jdmulloy | Ron Paul in 2012! | 5-1-07 | Unban Playfool | Fire your "Too big to fail" bank http://moveyourmoney.info |

steam, itself, is a client. you use it to download the dedicated server or client of your choice.

You might tell your friend that wine 0.9.37 is 100% compatible with Steam for windows. I have Half-life Anthology and Half-life 2 working with Wine.
The Steam listed under portage is for downloading server content as most games servers use Linux (for reliability reasons), at leat that's what I understand it to be used for. Currently there are no Steam Linux game clients released, just the servers. _________________ If God were a pickle, I'd still say "no pickle on my burger".

I too find this confusing and think it should be changed.

It really gives the impression that this is Steam for Linux or something like that, when it actually is just hldsupdate which downloads the server files. _________________

games-server/halflife-steam - client for Valve Software's Steam content delivery prog
It's under Games-Server category - that should explain everything. To me this says it's an app (i.e. client) for Steam enabled servers _________________ If God were a pickle, I'd still say "no pickle on my burger".
