recently discovered gkrellm2, found it very cool (and completely useless :p). i got it to run no problem on my workstation, but i'm having trouble on my server.
i want to be able to run gkrellm2 over the network, so i can see both computer's stats from my workstation. this is what happens when i try...
Code: | ian@catbert ian $ export DISPLAY=192.168.2.215:0.0
ian@catbert ian $ gkrellm2 -w &
[1] 24360
ian@catbert ian $
(gkrellm2:24360): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
[1]+ Exit 1 gkrellm2 -w
|
that's logging in through ssh from my workstation to my server, the ip address being on my LAN. no matter how i try it, that's the only result i get, and it's slightly fustrating. i've tried searching, can't find anything that helped me. i would like this to work, cause if i can get gkrellm2 to work for both computers, then make fluxbox look all pimped out and cool, maybe i can start convincing friends that linux has it's share of eye candy as well . |

Try out gkrellmd: on your server, run Code: | /etc/init.d/gkrellmd | , and on your workstation (where you're running X), run Code: | gkrellm -s <hostname> |
If that doesn't work, all you really need to do is Code: | export DISPLAY=<hostname>:0.0 | after logging in, but before running gkrellm2. |

Thanks a bunch. That came up surprisingly easy, and it fits perfectly into the slit. Now, just to add some more eye candy and show friends... :p |

oh, one other thing...
i do remember seeing something about the gkrellm daemon not being able to show disk usage. i was kind of hoping to be able to see this, if only for the hell of it. was the way using ssh or telnet able to show the disk usage? |

gkrellmd shows the disk usage on my remote machines, so I can't see why it won't work for you...[/code] |

It can't mount/unmount disks on a remote machine. That's about the only difference I think.

that's strange then...
when i go to the "disks" page in the GUI configuration, it's just blank, where as if i do that for my local machine, it has all the hard drives to select from. i assumed that meant disk usage was not able to be shown. any ideas? |

That -is- strange... but you're looking in the wrong place for disk space: the "Disk" monitor only show throughput to the drive, not how much space is free. For free space, you want the "File System" monitor.
As for why you're not getting any disks in the Disk monitor, you've reached the limit of my knowledge... mine are displayed properly... |

i can't say i know what exactly the chart is called, but the one that has the hard drive followed, and shows disk access, that's the one i want. according to you guys, it's doable, just i have no idea how :\. |
