Weird problem this; Just started installing Gentoo on a new laptop in a dual-boot config with the existing Windows partiton.

Gotten all the way through the initial setup and was executed the first reboot.

It started off okay - Grub appeared, I told it to boot Gentoo, it began loading fine but then panicked saying it couldn't mount the root /dev/sda3

I checked everything I could think off - Everything seems okay.

The weird thing is that I never see the SATA controller driver being loaded; I see the nVidia PATA driver being loaded, but not the SATA one, which is a good reason for why it can't mount /dev/sda3...

The question is Why?
See, the sata_nv driver *is* compiled in the kernel, but it never actually loads. It loads okay with all the LiveCDs etc. I've tried, just not with this kernel version!

I tried the AHCI driver too, but that doesn't load either...

Any ideas as to why? It's definitely compiled in as near as I can tell, unless there is some other pre-req you need to make it actually load the SATA driver on boot?

I suspect it's something really trivial, but can't for the life of me figure it out. I already browsed through google and various forums, and most of the people having these problems is down to things like the wrong/no sata driver, or booting the wrong kernel, but I'm as certain as I can be that that's not the problem here...

I R T3h Stoopid...

Re-checked my config and realised SCSI Disk support was off.

Flicked it back on and all is well! :D

Keep forgetting SATA still depends on SCSI; They should fix that, or put the SATA stuff back under the SCSI sub-systems...
