Canon Lide 30 scanner

Greetings!
a gentoo newbie here. Trying to get my scanner recognized by xsane. I can find the scanner and it is recognized, but when I start xsane, it tells me it can't find it. I know it works, had it working fine under Mandrake 9.1, but wanted to give gentoo a try. I do like gentoo, it's been an adjustment. sane-find-scanner finds the device(usb, btw) but when I start xsane, nothing. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. i've tried a lot of the suggestions posted on the forum,but nothing seems to work. Thanks for anything.
