When installing on a TiBook 800 DVI, i get the following error upon the first env-update. I am using a stage1 tarball, and i indeed do not have a "make.conf" file in my /etc/ directory inside my chrooted environment.
File "/usr/sbin/env-update", line 6 in ?
import portage
File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py", line 4359, in ?
settings=config()
File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py" line 807, in __init__
self.mygcfg=getconfig("/etc/make.conf")
File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py", line 579, in getconfig
f=open(mycfg,'r')
IOError: [Errorno 2] No such file or directory: '/etc/make.conf' _________________ [sic] |

I had the same errors, search the form and read others started with tarball #2 so I did the same and it work. I still did all the steps as though I had started with #1 tarball. |

i'm a firm believer in stage1 systems.
sooo...i did it the hard way, and wrote my own make.conf
everything's working fine so far, but i think it will screw me later on. _________________ [sic] |

I have just encountered the same thing tonight in a blue & white g3 tower? I have been searching all over the net but can't find anyone else who is having this problem...or at least it is not very widespread.
Is the python broken in these stage 1 tarballs? I don't know python or I would try to figure this out.
I will probably make my own make.conf too...or if you could mail me the one you used if you are not having too much trouble with it.
Thanks

just use the stage2 tar, and then pretend you're doing a stage 1 install. it'll be the same in the end, and you'll get no error. at least, that's what I did. |

Try copying the stage* file to your /mnt/gentoo directory (don't forget to mount your root partition to it) and running tar -xvjpf stage* from there.
I had that same problem too and it was because when i untar'd the stages from the cd, it did not complete. |

I've been having the problem the last few days because of power problems on my ibook. But copying or wget/ftp the stage to your drive and untar'ing it should work. |

Here's a thought. What if you did a stage 3 install, then after everything is up and running, you did "emerge --deep system" and/or "emerge --deep world". Notice I did not include the "-u" flag because my thought process with this idea is that it'll recompile and reinstall everything. Is this still the same as doing a stage 1 or 2 install? |
