Hi,
when i first installed gentoo with the gentoo live-cd, my sound worked (the beep in the console). Now that I have everything working (KDE, network etc.), my sound doesnt. So I tried to google for sound issues with my laptop, dell inspiron 6400, and found http://forums.pcbsd.org/viewtopic.php?p=44631&sid=c54a8c2e9f1f488386be417c206e0d4d. Obviously this is the same problem, and it could be solved by means of this workaround in the third post. Well, I therefore followed those steps (http://people.freebsd.org/~ariff/lowlatency/README), but my sound still isn't working. Exactly I did this:
0. i skipped the 0. step, as instructed by 'SumoX'
1. download sndkld_releng6_i386_giant_eradication.tar.gz (here: http://people.freebsd.org/~ariff/lowlatency/)
2. extract the contents into /boot/kernel
3. the kldxref command could not be found
4. copy soundcard.h into /usr/include/sys/
5. reboot
but i just got the same error after rebooting: Code: |
Sound Server Informational Message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device |
has one of u got any idea? thx in advance _________________ Life is not fair. But the root password helps |

This is Linux, not FreeBSD - their solution most likely won't work. The kernels are different. |
