mplayer asf stream capture cannot be played by wmp

I'm using mplayer to capture an asf radio stream and it appears to work just fine. The file utility identifies the file type as Microsoft ASF.
Mplayer can play back the file (captured stream) just fine.
Windows Media Player can play the stream live just fine.
But Windows Media Player cannot play back the file (captured stream)!

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I'm using ffmpeg to convert to a wav and then lame to convert to mp3. But would rather have just solved the problem of why wmp can play the live stream but not the capture - seems weird to me.
