|
|
Hi,
I just got 4 new SATA Harddisks and a SATA controller. But now I've got some problems getting them to work.
First I only used libata for the new SATA disks and got some weird messages in dmesg. Then I tried to use libata for all my drives because someone said that there may be problems if I use the "old" PATA drivers and libata.
But now all of my drives show the same problem. I've also tried to use the vanilla-sources but with no effect. It also seems that NCQ is not enabled for the SATA disks.
Hardware:
ASUS A7V-133
2x NIC
1x SAMSUNG SV0802N 80GB (connected to my onboard controller, bootdisk)
1x Promise SATA TX4
4x Seagate ST3250824NS 250GB (SATA)
1x Promise PATA
1x Hitachi HDS722525VLAT80 250GB (connected to Promise PATA controller because the onboard controller does'nt support large disks, storage)
I really don't know how to fix this. I hope you can help me.
I'll post my kernel config in a few minutes.
As you can see, all disks show the following message in dmesg at boot. The message also appears while the disks are under load. I used e2fsck to reproduce this message after boot.
Code: |
SCSI device sdc: 488397168 512-byte hdwr sectors (250059 MB)
sdc: Write Protect is off
sdc: Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00
SCSI device sdc: write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA
|
After boot, I've tried e2fsck on one of my SATA disks. All show the same message so I think they are not broken. Here the message:
Code: |
ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0

My problems are these messages in my dmesg output. I don't know why they appear and what they mean. I'm also afraid of broken filesystems caused by this.
Edit:
The other problem is that NCQ is not active (depth 0/32)
Code: | ata1.00: ATA-7, max UDMA/133, 488397168 sectors: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32) |

These messages are strictly informational.
As for NCQ, I can only suggest that you try out the AHCI generic controller for SATA, which, according to wikipedia, supports AHCI. However, I'm not entirely sure whether NCQ is disabled or what. I get the same message at boot. _________________ Configuring a Firewall? Try my iptables configuration

Ok but now I've got a new problem with my SATA drives.
I tried to use the SATA disks but wa stays at 100% and everything takes ages. Maybe I just have to buy another controller. Any suggestions for a controller with good driver support, stability and a good price?
Do these messages also appear on an AHCI generic controller? If not, which one are you using?
