|
|
Hi all,
we've decided to hold a small gentoo class on IRC next Thursday, and see if it goes well and if the experiment needs to be developed. The topic is "command-line usage" and we will try to speak about the following things:
1) why use command-line
2) what is a shell? a terminal? how to choose/install/launch one
3) common commands (ls/cd/cp/mv/rm/mkdir/man/...)
4) completion
5) more advanced commands (cat/less/vim/ps/top/mount/dmesg/...)
6) piping
7) tips and tricks
This is intended as a beginner course. You will only need a working linux (not necessarily gentoo) install and an irc client. If you already know the basic use of command-line, don't expect to learn anything. We won't go into more advanced topics like shell scripting or sed usage.
The class is expected to last for one hour, and will be followed by half an hour of Q&A, and open floor after that. The channel will be mute but we will still be able to read you and will voice people who have interesting questions.
The time will be 8pm UTC (that's 4pm on the east coast, 10pm in western europe, 9pm in the UK), and the place #gentoo-class on irc.freenode.net. Everyone is welcome.
If you can't attend, the logs will be available, and hopefully also a more readable edited version. _________________ Don't believe the red stuff, I'm retired. |

I've got a lot of Linux newbie friends I'd like to suggest to go there. |

Actually, you'd be surprised about how many fresh newbies we get -- Gentoo documentation is great. |

It's been discussed but there isn't enough time for a new GWN before thursday.
Anyway, it's just a try out, we'll see how it goes from there, and we'll be able to advertise more at that time. _________________ Don't believe the red stuff, I'm retired. |

This sucks. I check the forums all of the time and I just noticed this was here and I missed it. I hope it went well enough to have another. It would be nice to have classes for more advanced users as well. Maybe even some beginner dev classes. It might help bring some new devs our way.
This should have been posted on the front page! This is a great idea. _________________ Athlon 64 3200+, 80G WD sata hd + 200G IDE, 1G Geil DDR400, MSI K8T Neo

Yes, it went very well! The topic was for newbies but I guess we'll see more advanced lessons later on. |

Let me chime in by saying 'great initiative' as well. While I haven't attended (I'm probably not the target audience anyway) I think this is a great way of introducing people to some fundamental concepts, and to Gentoo IRC as well. |
