|
|
Hello,
I just purchased an extra 1GB stick of DDR2 memory for my laptop (Dell Latitude D610). 512MB of memory was already present in the system. After installing the new memory, Windows detects 1.5Gb of memory as being available. However, Linux only detects 881Mb.
Code: |
lithium@darkstar ~ $ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 881 647 233 0 222 81
-/+ buffers/cache: 344 537
Swap: 980 0 980
|
What's going on here?

Is CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G set to yes in your kernel config? _________________ Thomas S. Howard |

I guess it's a setting in the kernel configuration.
You should recompile the kernel with this option:
"Processor type and features" --> "High memory support" (choose 4G)
In case you dont have a kernel source yet, this page is a comprehensive guide on how to do everything. |

Yea, that option is not set but I thought that was only necessary if you have over 2GB or 4GB of memory. I'll try it and let you know.
Thanks. |

No. If you press "?", it will tell you to choose "OFF" if you don't have more than 1G |

That worked.
Code: |
lithium@darkstar ~ $ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1507 313 1194 0 26 158
-/+ buffers/cache: 128 1379
Swap: 980 0 980
|
Thanks. |
