No sound - sound very weak (ICH6)

I have a laptop bought in China - Compower (CL61) it is called. I had sound working on it originally when I installed it about 6 months ago, but then I reinstalled everything a couple a days ago, and now the sound is very weak. If I use headphones and turn it up to max, I can only just hear it. I have tried to search, but I can't seem to find anything relevant; sorry. The kernel is 2.6.20-gentoo-r8 and alsa is 1.0.14rc1.
