|
|
What I want to do is backup my entire system to a directory on my hard drive and create an ISO of it so I can burn it to a CD. That way I can just pop in the CD and install everything from that CD to another i686 system without having and internet connection configured.
Basically what you would do when installing RedHat.
I am sure that this has been brought up before, but I can't find it with "Search" or at least anything with an answer. |

Well, you could have used the -b switch when emerging so you could just emerge a binary package, but now that you've already compiled everything...

I'm sure there are open-source solutions as well, but I haven't looked into them. |

Norton's Ghost 2002 is a very popular tool that does this. I think it's a little windows biased, but I believe it works for everything. I've used it in several work environments on many different machines and it's a very good tool. The only problem is that windows bias. You would probably have to have a windows partition or something to install it on. Once you have it set up though you can make backups of any disk and partition that can be re-installed with very little effort. I wouldn't mention it here if I hadn't had so much personal success with it. I normally can't stand windows only products. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

You might also check out Mondo which is a backup tool used for bare metal recovery. Backs everything up to CD and restores it just like the original. Not quite as intrusive as a full-fledged imaging program and offers you a bit more flexibility as well. (restore to alternate file systems, different partition tables, etc.)

There have been 5 apps mentioned in this thread. Were you referring to a particular one?

Depending on your partition sizes, you can use BootIT NG. It will image the partition to CD. I use it on one machine. _________________ I can't think of anything catchy to put here, so I'll just leave it blank. |

I've just started to use Partition Image and it would compress 1 GB of data into a file of approx. 450MB (when using gzip'ed compression, bzip will most probably give even better results). This file can then be burned onto CD.
I have, however, not yet tried to restore the data so I can't say how reliable it works in that direction... _________________ Linux user #216018 |
