Could somebody explain this incredibly slow startup?

It is the clamav-milter. The loading of this beast takes ages. I don't know why it takes so long for you where you only have patterns for 23 virus. On my setup I have more then 200'000 patterns and it takes ages. |

I had my terminal set up funny - here's the real answer:
Quote: | # time /etc/init.d/clamd start
* Starting clamd ...
Running as user clamav (UID 101, GID 407) [ ok ]
* Starting freshclam ... [ ok ]
* Starting clamav-milter ... [ ok ]

There doesn't seem to be anything on Goog about this. I've got a debian box that gives an equally slow startup, though it starts in the background and I don't have to wait for it. Maybe I should head for the clamav NG. |

Where do you get your sig list that is nearly double mine?
ClamAV update process started at Mon Jun 18 01:22:00 2007
main.cvd is up to date (version: 43, sigs: 104500, f-level: 14, builder: sven)
Downloading daily-3454.cdiff [100%]
daily.inc updated (version: 3454, sigs: 23292, f-level: 16, builder: arnaud)
Database updated (127792 signatures) from database.clamav.net (IP: 64.142.100.50)
Thanks

The other number came off my startup message.
Does your clamav-milter start this slowly? There seem to be a lot of messages on the clamav-users mailing list about slow performance - but I can't see anything specifically about clamav-milter - except my question which has remained unanswered. |

Silly slow ... it's painful. It takes almost two minutes to load on this system. |

Cool! Because of the startup time and of instability issues I currently switched away from ClamAV. But 0.91 may get me back again |

What instability issues? I haven't run into any such things (admittedly I use a very low volume mailserver). |

ClamAV is a instable beast. Either the milter crashes or the damn daemon goes away. I hate it! Really. I don't care if it takes some time to start but I want this beast to run as stable as possible. But it does not.
Using it on the command line is okay. It works. But as soon as you start to use the milter or the daemon and you send constantly mails to check, then the thing will soon or later crash. |
