Just checking to see, if any has he same problem, as I am struggling with right now...
I emerged alsa-driver on a new Gentoo system, where my Intel High-Definition Audio is present, but - It might not be a problem, but when I run alsamixer, I get some strange channels to control - far from what windows had showed me - I got; Front, Line, Mic, IEC958, Caller I, Input and Off Hook - and I can only control a few of them - and still - no sound.
I would expect there to be a least a Master and PCM fader.
A little info about my system setup;
make.conf includes ALSA_CARDS="hda-intel usb-audio" (taken from a gentoo guide).
And I have a .asoundrc file in my home-directory;

I tried first with the kernel drivers, but got the same result - that is why I switched to the alsa-driver package.

Do you really need a Master slider? Main volume is controlled through Front and PCM is just the alsa soft-vol plugin (meaning it changes volume in software). The apps where it counts (music players, video players) allow you to configure which slider they control. I've simply configured them to control Front.
@bennedk: You shouldn't need an .asoundrc file. Delete it, restart alsa and then you should have a PCM slider, but as I've said it's just a software plugin, it's not really needed. |

okay, and how to tell kmilo to mute the PCM?
Thats why I need a master volume. When I press the mute button on my keyboard kmilo tries to mute the master volume.

If kmilo doesn't support such configuration, then it's lacking an important feature. You could file a feature request in the kde bugzilla or something.
I don't use kmilo, I have a custom .Xmodmap file for the multimedia keys. Then in kmix, I've configured these keys as shortcuts to do whatever I want to do, for example XF86AudioMute is the shortcut key for muting the Front slider. |

I switched from kmilo to keytouch
Nice tool to configure the extra buttons. |

Done - now I got rge PCM-slider as well. I have experienced that some software doesn't respond to my PCM fader, but that might be a bug?
And again - what is the purpose of the "Front"-fader?

'Front' is what actually controls the sound chip, while PCM is just an alsa software filter. The apps that PCM has no effect on - are they using OSS by any chance? If yes, it's normal, alsa's software filters won't have an effect on them.
My advice is to put PCM on 100% and then control volume with 'Front'. That's how I do it. |
