I would like to add "utf8" to the mount options used when I plug in my USB drive which has a vfat partition. Where do I find the config file that control this?

/etc/fstab
If you need help adding utf8, post a copy of your fstab |

But I don't have entries for my external USB drives in fstab. That would be impossible since I don't know what device nodes they get from time to time... |

are you manually mounting them or is there another program in gnome/kde mounting them?
it might be annoying to do this every time (put it in a script) but you may be able to "mount -o remount,utf8,other_options /dev/something /mnt/wherever" |

Check out this thread for some help on automounting external usb drives that don't always have the same /dev/address - if that doesn't answer your question then it's beyond me |

I assume it's hal/dbus automounting the drives for me in Gnome. But I can find no reference to the mount options in their config files. I've been looking in /etc/dbus-1, /etc/hal, /etc/udev and /etc/hotplug*. I've been greping for "vfat" in all of /etc but can't figure out how to grep recursively through the subdirectories.
EDIT: Also been looking it /etc/conf.d ofcourse... first choice |

Googling around a bit I realize it's gnome-volume-manager that is responsible for the automounting. I will Google some more to see if I can find out where its config files reside and how I can change them. If anyone already knows this I'd be happy to have some help... |
