dpetka2001,
It sounds like the BIOS is now identifying your drives differently than when you installed grub to the MBR.
Do that step again. _________________ Regards,

Hi all,
I get an error
GRUB Hard Disk Error
Whenever I cold boot the system.
I can get the system up and running again using the following steps.
Boot from the gentoo live cd
mount my root on /mnt/gentoo
chroot
reinstall grub
exit from chroot
umount /mnt/gentoo
reboot
Then it boots up as normal (As it used to).
Reboots will continue to be successful until I actually power down the machine. Then I'm back to square one.
I've run smart tests on all the hard drives and they've passed.
Thoughts??
TIA

After installling Gentoo 2007 from Minimal CD, following the Gentoo Handbook, after first reboot this happens:
Code: | Booting Gentoo Linux 2.6.23-gentoo-r6
root (hd0,5)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/linux-2.6.23-gentoo-r6 root=/dev/sda8
Error 15: File not found
Press any key to continue |
My disk is divided like this:
/dev/sda1 -NTFS-Windows XP PRIMARY
/dev/sda2 EXTENDED
/dev/sda5 -NTFS Logical
/dev/sda6 -ext2-boot-32MB Logical
/dev/sda8 -ext3-root Logical
When I read this document "Gentoo GRUB Error Collection" I came to this:
*maybe I make a mistake when I was copying image of kernel to /boot -I gave a name that a don't remember - HOW CAN I NOW EXPLORE THAT NAME OR THAT THE IMAGE IS THERE? LOOKING WITH Damn Small Linux to /dev/sda8/boot - is empty
*or how can I use now a GRUB INSTALL to repair GRUB?
Or what else I should do? |

The root should probably be (hd0,4) but it might be another number
When grub loads up, highlight linux hit the e key to edit the boot options, then hit the e key again to change the root line, and b to boot. |

max.ms,
Welcome to gentoo.
Error 15 is file not found.
Do you have any other hard drives attached that could cause sda to not be hd0 ?
Code: | kernel /boot/linux-2.6.23-gentoo-r6 | tells grub to look for a kernel file called /boot/linux-2.6.23-gentoo-r6.
Did you call your kernel *exactly* that?
As you have a real boot partition, your /boot either needs to contain a symbolic link or you will need to remove the /boot from kernel /boot/linux-2.6.23-gentoo-r6.
I'll add your post to the grub sticky _________________ Regards,

|
|
Hi all,
I hope this question has not already been answered. I read the summary (first post of Part 7) and there I found something similar to my problem:
Quote: |
Grub loading, please wait...
When rebooting you get this message and then grub hangs? But booting of your grub floppy works fine?
Code: |
"GRUB loading stage 1.5."
"GRUB loading, please wait..."
|
According to the_bell you should change the boot order in your bios. Don't first try to boot of your grub floppy.
penetrode wrote that this may also be due to bad CFLAGS settings. Although the current grub ebuild filters out -fstack-protector it can't hurt to recompile grub with CFALGS="" emerge grub if nothing else helps.
|
My problem is, it hangs on "GRUB loading stage 2.." but also with a boot disk, like the SGD (Super Grub Disk) the hang occurs. Other bootloaders seem to work: I tried the UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD), which boots fine. All the tools on it work, except GRUB, which I can select from the menu: It hangs while loading stage2.
So I don't think that there is a problem with the GRUB installation on my HDD. Could it be, that GRUB doesn't find my HDD?
GRUB already worked on this machine. But after I completely erased my HDD I can't get GRUB to work again.
I have to mention that I don't use Gentoo, but LFS. Except a repartitioning of the HDD and changing the appropriate configuration files, all remained the same (exactly the same version of GRUB, ...).
Do you have any hints for me? If you need more information, ask
Thank you,

I forgot to write that I have also:
/dev/sda7 swap Logical
and this should be for GRUB (hd0,4) as you wrote.
Thanks for your reply.

So how can I explore that there is a symbolic link in /dev/sda8/boot?

max.ms,
Do these steps to get back into your install as if you have never left it. now you can do Code: | cd /boot
ls -l

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Oct 6 2006 grub
drwx------ 2 root root 12288 Dec 14 2004 lost+found | The file Code: | lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 1 Dec 14 2004 boot -> . | is the symlink, the files with gentoo in their names are all kernel files, so the new kernel I made today is called 2.6.24-gentoo _________________ Regards,

Gentoo Users,
I've read the posts about grub 17 error, but still can't decipher what I'm doing wrong. Here are the files you'll want to see and here's how my drives are setup
My bios IDE Configuration is set to AHCI (it's the only way I could get gentoo to look at the disks)
HD:
1: SATA 150gb 10k rpm WD Raptor - With Windows XP Installed
No additional partitions
2: SATA 400gb WD Drive - Dedicated to Linux
(Partitioned as per the installation manual)
Partition 1: /boot ext2
Partition 2: swap swap
Partition 3: / ext3
3: SATA 320gb Seagate drive - NTFS Storage for Windows
No additional partitions
Now, here is the printout from
FDISK -l
Code: |
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l

Two things of interest. sdb...which should be the 400gb linux drive, but for some reason my system thinks there are 4 drives attached, I attribute this to enabling ahci and it thinking there is a 0mb drive on a port that isn't hooked up (there are 4 sata ports on this motherboard)
At any rate, going along with this here's my fstab, bare with me I had to write it all down.
fstab
Code: |
/dev/sdc1 /boot ext2 defaults,noatime 1 2
/dev/sdc2 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/sdc3 / ext3 noatime 0 1
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto user 0 0
#Windows Drives
/dev/sda1 /mnt/raptor ntfs user,noatime 0 0
/dev/sdd1 /mnt/storage ntfs user,noatime 0 0
shm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noexec 0 0
|
grub.conf
Code: |

timeout 20
title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.19-r5
root (hd2,0)
kernel /boot/gentoo-r1 root=/dev/sdc3
title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.19-r5 (rescue)
root (hd2,0)
kernel /boot/gentoo-r1 root=/dev/sdc3 init=/bin/bb
title=Windows XP Pro
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
|
Other root settings I've tried is:
Code: |
root (hd0,0)
root (hd1,0)
root (hd3,0)
|
and none work. I've since commented out all of the gentoo lines just to try and get the Window's part working, and it doesn't work with any of the hds either.
And here is what happens when I grub-install, ps I was a bit confused here as to which drive to write it to, it seems I should write the bootloader to my first hd (sda1) because that's the only one I could get it to boot to from the bios as far as I checked.
grub-install --no-floppy /dev/sda1
Code: |
livecd / # grub-install --no-floppy /dev/sda1

Installation finished. No Error reported.
This is the contents of the device map /boot/grub/device.map
Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect,
fix it and re-run the script 'grub-install'.
(hd0) /dev/sda
(hd1) /dev/sdb
(hd2) /dev/sdc

Thank you for taking your time to read my longwinded post, It's difficult because at the moment I have effectively no operating system save this live ubuntu cd Thanks again,

MoonDoggie,
Any error from grub means that grub could not complete and the kernel could not be loaded or started.
Therefore your fstab is not relevant yet, since it can't be read. Thats not to say its right, its another opportunity for error later.
sda looks like your 150G raptor, for windows, it has a a single NTFS partition, so thats ok.
sdb is a bit odd. Do you have any USB storage devices attcahed ?
They appear as SCSI disks and can mess up the boot process as the BIOS will renumber drives depending on if they are there at startup or not.
sdd has a single NTFS partion
sdc is your Linux install.
From your grub.conf root (hd2,0) tells grub to load from the first partition on the third HDD detected by the BIOS.
I presume you installed grub to the MBR in the same way.
Error 17 says grub found a partition but it could not read what was there, so I guess its an NTFS parttion.
If sdb was a removable device and was present when you installed bit not when you booted, that breaks the BIOS HDD detection.
If thats no whats happened, the BIOS is seeing one thing and the kernel another.
I would swap the Linux drive to be sda the windows boot drive to be some other drive.
You will then need to reinstall Grub to the MBR, edit grub.conf and /etc/fstab.
Booting windows gets a little more complex as you will need two map statements in grub.conf like this Code: | title=Windows XP
map (hd2) (hd0)
map (hd0) (hd2)
root (hd2,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1 | All the drive references there are to the as detected BIOS numbers. This fools a windows install on the 3rd drive to believe its on the first drive.
You can get back into your install to make the changes like this I would like to know whats causing the sdb to appear like that. _________________ Regards,

Thanks for the reply!

I thought so too. I was having problems installing Gentoo. See my other post about fdisk not being able to read drives. The only way to fix it so fdisk could see the drives was to enable AHCI in the bios, which is exactly when sdb showed up. It's not another device that exists. I suspect because ahci is enabled it's seeing the sata controller for my motherboard, which has nothing attached to it thus it reads 0MB.
I suppose a problem I had with the installation instructions is because they use a simplified 1 drive system setup, and they say to do your grub-install to /dev/sda, but don't explain if it's that way because it is the Linux install or the first drive. Since my bios boots to my first hd, installing grub on /dev/sdc, provided no result, because the bios didn't care what the MBR was on sdc.
So which does grub get installed on? sda (first disk) or sdc (linux drive)
I'm most confused because grub doesn't start up at all. It seems more intuitive that it should throw an error when I choose something from the list and throw an error. I guess it checks first. Even after I've completely commented out both the linux boot options and just left my windows, it still doesn't load grub...something is amiss.
Thanks again,
-Colin |

MoonDoggie,
On a one drive system, you only have a single MBR and there is no confusion.
With several drives, the BIOS and Grub need to agree on where grubs install is but it can be on any MBR
Some dual boot installs have windows installed on one drive (as your do) with the windows boot loader in that drives MBR.
Linux is added to another drive and grub installed on that drives MBR. The BIOS is then set to boot from the Linux drive, where Windows is added to grub.conf.
This arrangement has the advantage that the Windows install is untouched and can be booted directly by pointing the BIOs to boot the Windows drive.
Go back into the chroot and start the manual grub install with or Code: | grub --no-floppy
root (hd | if you don't have a floppy.
Press the tab key and grub will list all your drives (hd0, hd1, hd2 and hd3) maybe hd3 will be missing - thats important
Choose a drive number and add to the root statement, so it reads
press the tab key and grub will list the partitions on the selected drive.
Which drive does grub see 3 partitions on ? Thats your Linux drive that the kernel sees as /dev/sdc
Install grub to its MBR
Point the BIOS to boot from that drive ... at least grub should appear now. _________________ Regards,

I will do the steps as you outlined. I did however try this with the grub alternate install method, and when I use tab-completion it does indeed list all4 hds (hd0,1,2,3). I didn't however know you could tab complete after hd0, to find the partitions! I will try this after work, install it on linux's mbr and find a way to reinstall my windows boot loader. I'll post results, thanks again.

MoonDoggie,
Thats very interesting. That means your BIOS is seeing 4 drives as grub asks the BIOS about drives, it doesn not do its own detection. _________________ Regards,

Hi,
I need to change the current system drive to a bigger one. Both drives are currently installed in the system (hda/hdc - old/new). The new drive was partitioned, everything rsynced and I now need to install grub to it so that it will boot if I just swap the 2 drives. hdc1 is already bootable (will be hda1 in the future) and has the /boot grub dirs copied into it. So, now I don't know how to install grub. Should I do this:
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd2)
or this:
grub> root (hd2,0)
grub> setup (hd2)
Which one is the root command I must use?
Thanks,
Rui |

grub> setup (hd2) (hd2,0)
did the job.

I updated several of my systems over the past couple of weeks. Last night a power failure forced a reboot of some of them, and when at least one of them came back up, instead of timing out after 10 seconds and booting gentoo, it sat there forever waiting for someone to hit the return key. I am 400 miles away from these systems, and this creates a very inconvenient situation for me.
Has anybody else experienced any updates diddling with grub or grub.conf in such a way as to defeat the 10 second time-out?
Like I said, I am out of town on business, and only non-techniocal personel are available to actually sit at the console and try to work thru this problem. I don't want clueless noobs working as root on servers or firewals, so I will not get to see the console screen before Friday or Saturday.
Any ideas what caused this? _________________ The MyWord KJV Bible tool is at http://www.elilabs.com/~myword
