need advice on extending logical volume (lvm2)

i've added a pv to my vg...the added pv was a reiserfs partition. the vg has one lv on it with ext3. i want to lvextend to use the free pe from the added pv; does the ext3 filesystem of the lv automatically overwrite the reiserfs on the added pv from which the new pe are being added to the existing lv?

Forget your reiserfs partition, you gave it away when you turned it into a pv and added it to your vg. It's just unallocated storage space now.
Use lvextend followed by resize2fs to extend your current ext3 partition.
