hello guys, i am a new gentoo user and i am struggling to install it on my intel celeron m ,fujitsu siemens laptop.

i always go through the standard installation guidelines until i ve completed the installation.
when i reboot this is what i get: "kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,3)"
i really have no idea on what causes this.

the other problem i have is when i am installing the starballs: my processor is intel celeron m and is not listed there, so i have tried all the listed processors, but it still fails.

i am using gentoo-2.6.11-gentoo-r3, the gentoo 2005 cds

Your problem is a kernel configuration

Boot from live CD and chroot into environment and recompile the kernel with support for you "NOT AS A MODULE" File System
check http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-tipsntricks.xml

second question I did not understand what do you mean is not listed ? where ?

Your filesystem seems to be not built-in into the kernel. Which fs is your root (i.e. the / entry in fstab)?

Perhaps installing from a newer LiveCD with a newer kernel could help - there have been oh so many bug fixes between 2.6.11 and 2.6.21. :)
