First I would like to apologize for the capitalized Rs in this message(I tried to get them all with spell check) . The key isn't working. My computer Refuses to type the lower case R in most X applications. It works in my enlightenment 17 Run box but seemingly no where else. It works fine in the Root account and out of XoRg. EveRy where else it does not work. xev doesn't even report that it is the lower case R key while when I log in as Root it does. As you could imagine it is a pretty big problem I would like to try and get solved soon as possible. It has me completely stumped

That's strange, since your post exhibits both lower-case r's and upper-case R's. So it seems to be working some of the time. I'm a bit confused though. There's no such thing as a lower-case r key. Just an 'R' key that, with the help of Shift (in most/all cases) can become upper- or lower-case. Have you tried using a different keyboard?

Also I dont know what can cause that. So "enlightenment 17" is fine... where what are missing the 'r'? kde? gnome?
"in most X applications"... you meant everything except e17?
Perhaps some .xmodmap or some other key-binding?

firefox, kde apps, Xtem,pidgin, xchat. those are the ones I have tried so far. Er7 has no problem itself when I press the r key in the run dialog. also without X running it works fine.
Code:

KeymapNotify event, serial 31, synthetic NO, window 0x0,
    keys:  2   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   
           0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   
Thats xev's output on the key. it outputs what you would expect for the r key when I log in as root though. I temporaraly remapped a key with xmodmap so I can type r so it is less of a PITA.

I've had this problem a few times, if you open a menu in gnome, and press a key, that key gets assigned to the menu entry currently highlighted.

Find it and press BACKSPACE to remove it.

Its not set as a hotkey for anything. I think something to do with the keyboard layout or settings is screwed up but I don't know where to check.

It randomly started working again. I am now really wondering how it could happen. IT couldn't have been a hardware problem cause it still worked outside of X.

I had a similar effect when playing around with xmodmap.
Everytime I set a .Xmodmap in my home folder I'm losing the z and x key...
The only solution I have is to rename .Xmodmap to .myXmodmap
Then it works.
The problem only occurs in Metacity, not in Beryl.
