As in app-misc/beep. I can't figure this one out. The PC speaker does work because I get a 'beep' when I log in. Yet, every which way I've tried "beep" has lead to ear-piercing silence. Anyone have any ideas?

The system sounds in Gnome never worked as well... if that is related...

It appears that you (or your operating system) has decided to "turn off" your speaker because it found it too annoying. Try
Code:
xset b
