"Beep" won't work [solved]

As in app-misc/beep. I can't figure this one out. The PC speaker does work because I get a 'beep' when I log in. Yet, every which way I've tried "beep" has lead to ear-piercing silence. Anyone have any ideas?

The system sounds in Gnome never worked as well... if that is related...

Not sure how it got turned off but it works again. Didn't have xset.
