Hey. My monitor reports most of the time (about 75%) the error Out of range when I boot my gentoo server, or switch over to it with my kvm switch..

There's no X installed on it. Just got the promt. I might be missing something in kernel or whatnot, but I have no clue on what really.

Regards

Tobbe

if you disconnect the monitor while it's out of range and hook it up straight to the pc, does it still say out of range?

most likely it has something to do with the EDID or whatever it's called that sends data from the monitor to the PC to identify it, and some KVMs do not replicate this data back properly.

I've seen (and have) some crappy KVMs that don't work properly if you don't boot the machine when the KVM is switched to it... Mouse stops working, funny video isses... might be time to upgrade KVMs.

So far I've had some issues with the belkin kvms. At work we use http://www.rose.com KVMs and they work pretty well. Only issue i've ever had with them is some _extremely rare_ kvm "crashes" (which can be reset, and the machines work fine after that as if nothing happened to the kvm.)

My belkins frequently required a power cycle of the machine to restore mouse activity after for some reason, losing it.

It happens without the KVM too, if I plug the monitor in to it directly and try to (re)boot. I see lilo starting up uncompressing linux.. Then the boot information goes missing and comes back at the end when it's asking for an ip.
