i don't have time to type the whole thiing but i think starting over again.

From what you have posted, I do not see a circular dependency. I'll need that part of the error message too.

Probably a wrong location for the splashimage in grub.conf. Try commenting out that line.

Yes, you can. That is the way I would try to solve the problem if it was my box.

Boot up with the livecd/installcd, mount your partition(s) and edit your grub.conf, save and reboot and try again.

The framebuffer statement is made in your grub.conf file and look something like this:

Code:
default 0
timeout 20
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
############################################
#
title=CK-sources 2.6.21-ck2
root=(hd0,0)
kernel=(hd0,0)/boot/kernel-2.6.21-ck2 root=/dev/hda3 vga=0x0376 video=vesafb:mtrr:3,ywrap
#

But for the framebuffer to work your kernel needs to have the right support for it, there is more information here from the Gentoo Wiki

As for myself I do not have any framebuffer settings whatsoever in my grub.conf so it falls back to some generic default value like 640x480 for my virtual consoles.

The #### are just for comments, so they have no meaning to grub.
Have you tried to get grub to work without the framebuffer setting?

There is a handy page in the Gentoo documentation for grub errors. It can help troubleshoot and see what the problem could be.

Also I second what nixnut wrote previously, try commenting the line #splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz if that is whats causing your errors so you can not see anything at startup.

Wish I had an any-button too ;)

I think you have got your error right there, as h0,0 should be hd0,0. As you probably have noticed grub has a special way of naming the disks, so it gets confusing.

Why not post your grub.conf here so we can see if we can help you getting this settled.

you typed root (h0,0) where it should be root (hd0,0) and
root=/dev/sda3 where it should be root=/dev/hda3
[EDIT]c4 were faster than me[/EDIT]

Sounds like one of the errors like #10 or #11 in the grub error guide

From your information it appears that grub could load the kernel, but than I guess that nothing else happened. It is my guess that the settings for root=/dev/... are incorrect.
Care for showing your grub.conf as it is now, and describe how your harddrives are mounted in your box and where your Gentoo partition is?

That's why I asked to see your config file and to get some more info from you.
In case you use satadrives, as you seem to do, your grub setup may need to be adjusted to something like this:

Quote:
default 0
timeout 10
#splashimage=(hd0,2)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
############################################
#
title=CK-sources 2.6.20-ck1
root=(hd0,2)
kernel=(hd0,2)/boot/kernel-2.6.20-ck1 root=/dev/sda3

Though you will need to adjust the drive numbers and partions to the setup you are using.
