Recently purchased an IBM R60E Laptop with Core 2 CPU / GMA950. Was prepared to load X86_32 Gentoo on it, then began to wonder about the state of 64bit Gentoo.

Is it useful enough to be used for everyday ?? No Gaming, just Code, Web, Word Processing/Spreadsheets.

Have used Gentoo since 1.4 , but have not kept up to date with 64 bit , since all my desktop rigs are still Athlon XP.

Any input would be appreciated.

While there are lots of other threads on this topic..... yes, I feel that ~amd64 is very well-developed and ready for desktop use. I've been using it as my personal desktop for over two years and put it on my new core 2 duo laptop a few months ago. The only thing holding it back from being perfect is the firefox-plugin support. I end up having both 32- and 64-bit firefox installed to compensate for this. Of course you can use opera and not worry about that...

I assume you mean Flash and Java being a hassle, ...

There appears to be a package for mplayerplug-in for AMD64, .. does that (mplayer / mplayerplug-in) work ok in 64bit firefox ?

flash works fine in 32-bit firefox, mplayerplug-in works fine in 64-bit firefox, and I won't touch java with a 10-foot pole :)

Flash works in 64bit firefox too.

Just do this:
Code:
emerge netscape-flash nspluginwrapper

Eh... It seems to run much better in 32-bit firefox. Everything in flash runs slowly or seems kinda buggy for me using nspluginwrapper. YMMV

if nothing else, it (http://gwenole.beauchesne.info/en/projects/nspluginwrapper) certainly seems to be under active development....

Not here - I run flash/nspluginwrapper every single day (Youtube ;-) ) and it's as smooth as possible ...

Yes, nspluginwrapper + netscape-flash work great for youtube. Flash games are where they tend to break down and just plain run noticeably slow. In my experience at least.

works fine as in 'the java apps I am using, freecol, triplea, a java-based chat are working flawless'.

and the browser plugin: if you tell me a site which needs java, I would certainly try it.

I've been using amd64 for a long time now and I can't tell the last time I had an issue with it.. perhaps virtualbox not installing? But then I use the 9999 build of that now which works just fine in amd64.

Since mplayer started having the ability to play wmvs without win32codecs I've dropped mplayer-bin and I dropped firefox-bin recently due to nspluginwrapper (for some reason I just never tried it before, so was using firefox-bin when I didn't really need to).

It just seems 'right' to be running a 64bit desktop (if you can)... I mean, how else will the 64bit version of the distro be de-bugged without users running their amd64 and EMT64 rigs in 64bit mode...

http://www.java.com - not only do they display java directly on the page, but they usually have a showcase that links to a site that uses java.

The showcase on the homepage of http://www.java.com is flash, not a java applet.
The link to the crystalsquid.com game crashes my firefox :(

your quotes are wrong ;)

I tried konqueror (KDE 3.5.7), native 64bit, 64bit java. And the java-apps just work. Flash does not work - and I don't miss it - for 'emergencies' a 32bit firefox is installed.

Finally loaded up 2007.0 on the Thinkpad but ... visiting a site with a java applet prompts for a Java Plugin Download.

A quick look at about:plugins shows that there is no Java anywhere in sight. How in the world can anyone play these java games ( http://www.crystalsquid.com/games/sol/sol_play.php ) without a java plugin ??

because there is a java plugin?

I am using it with konqueror and it works fine. I have installed it, set with java-config to the right vm (sun-jdk) and it just works. Nothing else to do - with konqueror. Maybe firefox just sucks?

*cough* you are correct *cough* (about one thing) .

Sun-JDK-1.60 works perfectly in Konq. Now that I have disabled IPV6 in /etc/modules.d/aliases, Konq is finally fast enough to keep up with FF. I will use for all my Java Applet Needs. Thanks for the help :)
