Is there a way to set the default sound card when ALSA is built into the kernel? |

I don't quiet understand what you mean by this, hoiw about choosing a set of sound cards in the kernel config and built them either as modules or in the kernel ?

ALSA is not in the 2.4 kernel. You need to download and install ALSA seperately (it is in the Portage tree). If you install ALSA, you do not want any sound card drivers built into the kernel as they will (probably) cause a screw up, although it is fine to build them as modules but just not load them.
You configure ALSA as per the ALSA configuration guide: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml.
