I'm in a network which also has some windoze users. Now, they pick the IP they want, and if the IP address is already being used by another computer, no matter the OS, your connection is lost --the "ip thief" windoze doesn't get an IP as well, on the second try however, he gets it. When I try to get back my IP back however (address set by hand in conf.d/net), it complains "this IP is already taken".

Now, I'm tired of this, I want my IP back. and I know it can be forced to make an attempt to take the IP, as windoze machines are doing here well; the question is, how can I do this?

I had this problem with a ssh server losing its IP because some n00b assigned the same IP to a nokia firewall running on the same cidr. Actually losing the IP is incorrect, what happens is that the arp table on peer machines has the wrong MAC address for the IP.

The solution is simple: arping! I can't remember the exact options but you can send out your MAC via arp and reclaim your IP when this happens. Put it in cron for automated recovery. Something like this:
Code:

arping -U <your IP>
