I think there is a problem with the new kernel 2.6.22.

The broadcom 43xx wireless drivers cannot be selected if you don't select the old softmac
It is my understanding the the mac80211 is supposed to completely replace softmac (http://softmac.sipsolutions.net/)
This appears to be a kernel maintainers problem as I tried both gentoo-sources and vanilla sources

If I'm understanding this incorrectly, who can I go to verify it
And If I am correct, who do I tell.

Yeah, it will replace it: eventually. That doesn't mean all drivers have been converted to the new stack yet.
