I have experiencing random computer shutdown lately, and I think it is being trigger by some ACPI event that I don't quite understand. Here's from /var/log/everything/current:
Code: | Jul 20 01:04:07 [logger] ACPI group processor / action CPU is not defined
- Last output repeated 41 times -
Jul 20 01:10:02 [cron] (root) CMD (test -x /usr/sbin/run-crons && /usr/sbin/run-
crons )
Jul 20 01:10:02 [logger] ACPI group processor / action CPU is not defined
- Last output repeated 3 times -
Jul 20 01:10:57 [logger] ACPI group processor / action CPU is not defined
- Last output repeated 13 times -
6 ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/make
Jul 20 01:13:09 [logger] ACPI group processor / action CPU is not defined
- Last output repeated 7 times -
Jul 20 01:15:21 [logger] ACPI group thermal_zone / action THM0 is not defined
Jul 20 01:15:21 [logger] ACPI group processor / action CPU is not defined
Jul 20 01:15:21 [kernel] ACPI: Critical trip point
Jul 20 01:15:22 [shutdown] shutting down for system halt
|
What is this Critical trip point?? My computer is a IBM T42, and it's running on AC power... _________________ -----------------------------------------------------------

it does sound like its overheating... maybe this can help, give the dsdt a rebuild and see if it helps.

I am experiencing much the same here, although I haven't been able to tie it to ACPI in any way. In my case it doesn't just shut down, it reboots, but it might just be a matter of wording and it actually reboots in your case as well?
Though logs I have been able to track the start of this back to 15 July, the same day I returned from holiday and started to update my system again, starting with a sync and then emerging a new version of Portage. It also seem to be related to compiling in some way, as if I don't do anything on the computer it stays up longer but if I emerge it just manage a packet or few depending on size and then suddenly reboot.
Since the 15th I been able to remerge all system packages and is now down to 82 left in the world file using emwrap and its resume feature. Problem remain still though. It's definitely random as the reboot always occur at different points and different amount of time running.
In cases like this hardware failure can not be excluded but it seem unlikely to me as my x86 PC just have a couple of months on the neck, and appearingly I am not the only one - although it "might" be coincident.
If I find anything I will let you know. Just in case I paste my #emerge --info below, it might say something to someone?

In fact, the 15th the weather changed to become very hot here, although my server stands in a server hall with cooling. However, I just booked a visit to the server this afternoon as I suspect it's placement may have something to do with it. The CPU fan sits on the side and it might stand too close to the next box or something. Good catch, thanks! _________________ /Joakim

I don't notice it being extra hot, and I have it on my lap... _________________ -----------------------------------------------------------

if the problem we experience have the same source it's not ACPI related as I don't have it activated in my kernel. Being a server it runs all time and no need for it. This doesn't doesn't exclude heat as the problem though. It might not "seem" to be hot, but the cpu may get too much of it anyway. I can think of 2 hardware issues related to this, a failing Power Supply unit, and individual RAM that start to malfunc. In fact, I have experienced the first lead to the second once, on a Desktop PC. It started with random reboots and finally didn't reboot at all due to power failure. After replacing the Power unit it rebooted again but was unable to start up Windows XP (in this case). Running a RAM check program I was able to find that some blocks of memory addresses on the 2 peices closest to Power unit was damaged and after replace everything was back to normal.
Well just some thoughts. _________________ /Joakim

Well in my case it seem to have been the Power Supply unit, although it was only 4 months old. I monitored the CPU at place and it in fact stayed pretty cooled, still random reboots. Had the feeling of it as it failed me before and after replacing it all now seem well although it's too soon to tell for sure. However, before I could never compile for more then 10-15 min, if I was lucky, now I am about to pass 2 hours and I expect it to continue that way. _________________ /Joakim
