A cron job runs logwatch nightly and part of the summary is from smartd. Over the past few days entries like the following have appeared:
/dev/hdb :
Prefailure: Seek_Error_Rate (7) changed to
100,
/dev/hdb :
Prefailure: Seek_Error_Rate (7) changed to
200, 100, 200, 100,
/dev/hdb :
Prefailure: Seek_Error_Rate (7) changed to
200, 100, 200,
Those are for Jul 09, 10, 12. No Seek_Error_Rate change is reported on the 11th. I know that just because something is labeled "prefailure" doesn't mean it is bad that it changes. Searching I could not find any instance of only this problem being reported. I have never seen it before. No error has been logged nor has any self test (run nightly) failed. Complete info below.
Is the Seek_Error_Rate attribute changing a sign of a problem?

Quote: | Is the Seek_Error_Rate attribute changing a sign of a problem? | Is a sign that your hardware is getting older. I would start to worry, if those values drop below their thresholds. And remember, smartd is only a tool, i might be that your hdd fails without warning.
Counter-Question: How old is your hdd, and how often has it been used?
I have had several cases, where the hdd failed after 3 years, and judging from the printout you gave, yours is about 2-3 years old.
cheers

Thank you for the reply. It's about 3-4 years old. It's been on for most of that time but not heavily accessed (ie the OS is on another disk). All of the data is backed up too (had my main disk die before, learned lesson).
I think one of Google's studies said smartd predicted about 50% of failure cases, which is better than the disk dieing on you. |

reallocated sector but no current or offline pending sectors. |
