emerge sync hangs

new to linux, new to gentoo, here is my problem:

i have gotten to the emerge sync stage, i hit enter and then i get to:
starting rsync with rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage

then nothing happens, i now have a flashing curser and no #

dhcp is enabled and the adapter has an ip, any thoughts as to why? using the search function has sort of left me scratching my head at the different threads returned...
