Two Different Kernels, Mouse Buttons show up different

I am running amd64 with the 2.6.22-r1 kernel, I have the standard kernel that is a light config specifically for this computer and a complete config that I have compiled because I will very soon be swapping the motherboard and a few other components, same processor but different m'board, adding a hard drive, different nvidia video card, different power supply. The lighter kernel shows up my mouse buttons as they should be, left thumb buttons as buttons 8 and 9, the complete kernel shows them up as butttons 2 and 3. Any ideas as to what might have caused this?
