Hi,

I have just finished emerging world. While everything seems to be in place, there are two strange error that I experience when I log in.

The first is that all the desktop icons are gone. I don't know how to get them back.

The second is that my wallpaper never comes up. I have to manually go to System -> Preferences -> Desktop Background. But as soon as I do that, even before clicking on my wallpaper, the original setting gets restored--sans the icons.

I really have no idea what is causing this. I am hoping that .xsession-errors would be of some help, so I am pasting it here:

Quote:

roy@localhost ~ $ cat .xsession-errors
/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/X11R6/bin/sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h "" -l ":0" "roy"
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: /usr/bin/ssh-agent -- gnome-session
SESSION_MANAGER=local/localhost:/tmp/.ICE-unix/14573
roy@localhost ~ $

Perhaps I should also mention that after I emerged world, instead of manually merging or updating all the new config files, I simply "zapped" all the new ones with dispatch-conf. Could that be the source of the problem?

I read the man page for dispatch-conf, and it said that if I wanted to retain the old settings I could zap the new files--and so I did. I certainly wasn't anticipating problems of this nature.

Thanks in advance for your help.

First of all, create a new user and log in, if everything is working fine with that user then it is simply your normal user's configuration, and should be an easy fix.

If you get the same problem with the new user, then there is a problem with your gnome installation, by my money is on the user config being behind this.

Anyway, the in gnome desktop icons and background are drawn/managed by the file manager, so see if opening nautilus fixes it.

There are settings within nautilus to enable or disable drawing the desktop icons.

If it is just the noraml account which is affected, you can simply delete (or better yet back up) all the gnome config stuff, but this should only be done as a last resort (and not while gnome is running).
