Hey. I have an Intel DG965WH with an IDE DVD Recorder for quite a while now. Everything was fine until yesterday de DVD happended to turn a DVD disc inside it literally to dust, it shattered the disc within the drive. Now I have to buy a new one and Im thinking about buying a SATA one. I wonder f there is something that can go wrong using SATA drives for legacy matters, if gentoo DVD will boot nonetheless, or if will KDE automounter with hald work with it. We know what can go wrong when you change some standards in hardware, right?! (like windows XP + sata HDs). Ig any of you guys have anu experience with it, plz lemme know. Thanks in advance.

Well, I've got an Samsung SH-183L(if I remember the name correctly) connected to an Asus P5B-V for ~1 year and running without problems. FreeBSD 6.x had problems with it, so I set it to IDE-compability-mode, but FreeBSD 7 and Linux also works in AHCI-mode for me without problems.

If it works basically, you won't have problems with HAL or anything, that's just another layer on top, only thing you should look out for, is the needed S-ATA support in your kernel, but I guess you're already running S-ATA hdd's, so it should be a straight shutdown, plug-in and boot.

If on your board you don't have a Jmicron chipset, then you will be fine.

Do you mean Jmicron in general, Jmicron activated or the drive connected to Jmicron? At least, the first to are no problem here, haven't tested the last one though(there are better S-ATA-controllers out there ;) ).

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. I figured that probably I wouldn't have any issues with linux, since kernel is open-source so its much more updated and etc. But I think that in the end I will buy an IDE one, because of windows. I guess it won't boot from a SATA drive, and I still use it to play games :p Thank you all very much, anyway.
