I got a problem with new ati-drivers. The old versions of the ati-drivers (until 8.32.5) was working without problems.
But if i install a newer one, the whole machine is crashing when i start the x-server. Loading the fglrx-module with modprobe works as usual without errors. When i start the X-server the pc hangs up, there is a black screen with a standing cursor on the top left. Have to restart the computer.
I tried to use another version of xorg and various settings in xorg.conf. But nothing helped.
The ati-drivers-8.32.5 can't be installed when using a kernel-version newer than 2.6.19. So i still have to use 2.6.19.

Does anyone of you have an idea, what to do?

i am having the same prob with my ATI x1950GT card, have found that the fglrx module locks up when the xserver is started.

hmm,
i got a X700 PCIe in a notebook
the strange thing is that it worked without problems.
When any newer driver is used everthing locks up.
I have no idea where the problem is.
Maybe there is something with the shared memory.
Is it possible that the ati-card is overwriting the memory of the kernel?

it shouldnt, but i dont know, what driver and kernel works for you? and i have read some where that you should compile with the x11-opengl and not the ati-opengl as that can make it lockup, i am testing this right now.

mine is a desktop PC with PCIe, and i havent been able to get it to work with the fglrx, i have to use the vesa drivers

what do you mean with x11-opengl?
that eselect opengl is set to xorg-x11?

i cant find the post now, but it said that the lock ups are because you compiled the system with ati-opengl and you should of done it with the x11-opengl (eselect opengl is set to xorg-x11) i dont know if this will fix mine or your system but i am going to try with older ati-drivers and see if that will do any thing, i am running a gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r8

with gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r8 you cannot emerge ati-drivers 8.32.5 or older
that is my problem, because i just want to upgrade my kernel, but the damn ati-drivers are not working

well i cant test it atm as i am still emerging GCC so as soon as thats done i will try ati-drivers-8.32.5 and will downgrade the kernel as well, in my mind if it works then leave it alone, i know newer should meen better but that is not all ways true, you can all ways use the vesa driver as i know that works for me

same here, could be ATI/AMD dont like linux so the mess up the drivers for it? dont know, but i have never had any probs with ATI untill now.

and sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.19-r7 is masked by ~amd64 O_o but sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.20 is not
