Hello,
that's mostly my question: Do I need linux-headers when I have vanilla-sources installed and placed the linux symlink in /usr/src/?

In therory no, but tell this every ebuild which needs linux-headers.

Yes. Very few packages build against the headers found in the 'kernel of the day'
About the only ones I can think of are kernel modules. The reason is that the headers can change every kernel version.
To bring some stability and sanity to our lives, the system uses a separate kernel-headers package that changes only when needed, and certainly not with every kernel. _________________ Regards,
