Everything is perfect on my Gnome desktop until yesterday I found that
gimp & xsane can no longer start all in a sudden!

It seems to be GUI startup problem, because the sane backends and
commandline scanimage works fine.

However, when I try to start gimp/xsane, it immediately abort with error
message "Segmentation Fault". I use "strace" to print out some debug
information, and found that both programs abort right after loading /etc/X11/gtk/gtkrc.xx files.

Here is a more detailed gdb backtrace (for gimp):
Code:
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
[Switching to Thread 16384 (LWP 1691)]
0x40046004 in _init () from /usr/lib/libgtk-1.2.so.0
(gdb) backtrace
#0  0x40046004 in _init () from /usr/lib/libgtk-1.2.so.0
#1  0x400faa4d in gtk_rc_parse_any () from /usr/lib/libgtk-1.2.so.0
#2  0x400fce57 in gtk_rc_parse_file () from /usr/lib/libgtk-1.2.so.0
#3  0x400f9c9b in gtk_rc_parse () from /usr/lib/libgtk-1.2.so.0
#4  0x400f96f4 in gtk_rc_init () from /usr/lib/libgtk-1.2.so.0
#5  0x400ccb9b in gtk_init_check () from /usr/lib/libgtk-1.2.so.0
#6  0x400ccd96 in gtk_init () from /usr/lib/libgtk-1.2.so.0
#7  0x0812f841 in main ()
#8  0x4036c7a6 in __libc_start_main () from /lib/libc.so.6

I would say, all other gtk GUI programs are working perfectly, like ggv,
gthumb, gtoaster, mplayer, mozilla, openoffice, except those two which
also work perfectly a couple of days ago.

Anyone know what the potential cause is? and what should I do?

Thanks!

If this happens after an upgrade to xsane, it looks like a delete of the previous settings in e.g. ~/.sane/xsane can be a fix. This is also document with the distribution of xsane

Solved it with installing xsane-0.93
