Enlightenment ?!?!

From what I read so far in the gentoo forums everybody is using either KDE, Gnome, or Fluxbox as window manager....

So far I've always either used Gnome or KDE....just like everybody else...but I've also used Enlightenment ...much more than any other manager in fact.

It always worked fine, fast, stable, etc for me....So I wanted to know howcome nobody seems to use it?

The themes for it kick ass too....I remember that one that modified your whole desktop to look and act like a star trek computer....too freakin' nice.

So.....why is nobody using it? Is there an issue I don't about....a disadvantage that no other manager has???

I tried it along with 6 or so themese that I thought were all awful. E itself may be fine. There were some quirks about it I didn't like, but didn't use it enough to resolve them.

Well, from what I have seen, it is only eyecandy and to be frank with you, I didn't particularly care for them either. Looks nice as a picture, but a nightmare to work on for 8 hours a day.

I think it is still far from having reached enlightenment ;-)

Truly, it is because I could never really figure out how to use it. probably I wasnt ready to use it. Currently I use Fluxbox, but now looking to try FVWM although waimea is looking good to me again. E just didnt seem to have the right fit.

I used E almost exclusively two-three years ago... I used it with GNOME 1.2..

from E, I switched to sawfish (which was back then sawmill)... it was actually quite a bit more customizable than E.. eventually, I got tired of GNOME+sawfish, so I switched to blackbox... I ditched blackbox, and later fluxbox, when KDE 3.0 came out.. I've been using that for the last year.

Enlightenment is all nice but it's not a DE, and that's what I need - but Rasterman has some nice ideas.

I use enlightenment with the Maw theme.

It's definitely my favorite window manager. It takes a significant amount of time to configure to suit yourself, however - I use fluxbox in situations where I just want to get a window manager up quick.

I use E16 with the Genesis, or K10K themes, and all the effects turned off. Used that way it's like a better looking *box imo.

Ive since tried it stand alone, and did use it for some time. But in the end I found KDE 3 much closer to the DE I was looking for. I have however compiled E 17 from CVS a few times (easier now with the cvs ebuild) and will most likely try E17 as my desktop when released. I keep it installed, however, as I love to use E to show off to people not used to linux

I've tried E16 and the beta E17 (or alpha?).
I was lazy at the time I never took the time to get into either of them. For now Gnome 2.2 works just fine with me!

For some stupid reason I wont use E untill e17 is released, I allways want the latest and greatest... perhaps i'll give the CVS another go, see if its stable enough for use yet.

slougi and avenj Looking at your desktops.. They are the exact reason why I can't use that type of eye candy. Trying to get any work done for 8 hours a day in front of one of those screens and i would have a headache all the way down to my toes!

I agree, it looks great as eye-candy, but it is horrible to work on. It's a total disaster for your eyes, it's almost impossible to read dark text on a dark background and transparancy is hopeless in a work setting.

If all you do is read a few emails and surf the web a bit, sure ok. Playing mp3's in xmms, no problem. But having to concentrate on what you read and trying to do some brain work with those decorations is just not good.

IMHO the desktop should be as invisible as possible, the focus should be on the work you do. The use of colors should be pleasant on your eyes and not put an extra strain on them. The colors should be subdued, but not dark, yet not too bright.

Oh well... It's not MY desktop

Honestly, I only use transparency in screenshots for eye-candy reasons.
