devfsd

On bootup, system tells me that devfsd not installed. Rebuilt kernel 12 to 15 times now and reqorked everything.
set menuconfig for reiserfs ext3 & proc as per doc include devfs n filsystem. dmesg shows no devfs at all. docs call for devfsd to be put in boot scrip with following command "devfsd /dev". Which script and where is it in /etc.

Yes I have, devfsd-1.3.25-r3 was version used. Does any body know where the command devfsd /dev is placed in the boot up sequence. I have built 2 machines now using the method 3 live cd. Both work nicely except no devfsd. I must get this working so that I can print.
