i'm using the amd64 (x86_64) install for this to match my 64 bit processor

i untar the portage snapshot to /usr (as in the gentoo handbook)
using:
Code:
tar xvjf portage*.tar.bz2 -C /mnt/gentoo/usr

with no errors and all the files are where they should be.

i switched to using the hardened multilib profile and continued with chrooting, emerging and configuring as normal.
i am using the hardened sources with PAX and grsecurity enabled

when I reboot the first time and try to emerge anything i get the error
!!!!arch is not set.

when i check the /etc/make.profiles symlink it's to the same location as before the reboot but the /usr/portage directory is empty and is green background with black text in bash. If i try to re-untar the portage snapshot using the same command above but with the directory corrected i get an error:
you may only use one of -AcDux.

if i copy the portage snapshot to /usr i can untar it but about 75% of the way through i start getting the error for every file in the archive:

cannot open <file_inside_tar> no such file or directory.

and finally throws the error:
exit delayed from previous errors

i'm sorry my errors aren't exact copies. after reboot lynx has started a giving a "cannot find host" message but i'm hoping this is an unrelated problem.

thanks in advance

any ideas???

The portage snapshot could have been corrupted during the download. Have you tried fetching a new copy?

yes i did with the same results and on both copies of the snapshot the md5sums are correct but differe between the two files. they were downloaded from different mirrors as well.

i've given up messing with it and am starting over.
