Hello,
I'm trying to setup my DVD burner, Samsung SH-S183A, on Gentoo. It works perfectly when it comes to reading CD's, but I cannot get it detected as a burner. I tried k3b's automatic detection without any luck, and running cdrecord -scanbus (as root) gives me the following result:
Code:
wodim: No such file or directory.
Cannot open SCSI driver!
For possible targets try 'wodim --devices' or 'wodim -scanbus'.
For possible transport specifiers try 'wodim dev=help'.
For IDE/ATAPI devices configuration, see the file README.ATAPI.setup from
the wodim documentation.

I know that this burner works on linux because I tried booting a Knoppix CD, and it detected the burner properly. Also I saw other posts on this forum reporting it as working. Any help would be appreciated. :)

If this is a SATA cd burner like I suspect, the you probably need some of the kernel stuff enabled, not quite sure what though, they got rid of SCSI emulation for IDE but I've never used SATA CD-Drives on linux. Also the fact it ran under knoppix seems to support that idea. Take a nosey around the kernel sources and check out google for ideas.

HTH
