Hey guys. My laptop is slowly dying and I need to purchase a new computer (in my case build one). I'm thinking about a ATI HD2600xt because of its attractive price. However I do game alot on my linux box (Doom, UT, Quake, wine) so I'm going to need something that can actually put some power forth. In windows I've noticed that with every driver update there has been attractive amounts of improvement with gameplay. However I don't know if the same is true with linux. Can anyone tell me if the drivers have improved recently, or if I should just stick with an Nvidia card (which I don't want to b/c of price issues). Thanks in advance.

Short answer: NO
Long answer: The drivers are ATM in a HORRIBLE state, in caps. There are thousands of bug reports, most of them still unsolved after a full year. They are still missing support for many important desktop issues, like AIGLX and EXA, and the 3D performance is pathetic, about half of what it *should* be. 2D performance is even much worse.

For what I read, crashes are fairly common when using dual monitors, Xvideo or just about anything, but I can't comment on the issue personally. Screen corruption happens every now and then, and hibernation is very problematic. Enough?

You are welcome. Hope that helps ;)

I've been using ati over the past 3 years, and I must say that they improved. (or i just got a little more hardened) I cannot say much about nvidia, as my new computer has a quadrofx, which is much better supported, than any mainline geforce card. I could state the same about firegl and radeon.

Main problem here is, that none of new HD2x00 cards is supported for linux right now.
Just click yourself through this page

cheers

I've got two systems with similar specs. One has an older ATI card, the other has a newer NVidia card. The ATI box was incredibly difficult to get working properly, and even now everything doesn't work quite right. The NVidia box on the other hand was very easy and everything works great.

Its probably worth paying more to have everything work.

Yay, ati-drivers 8.39.4 are in portage.

If something has changed, I can't notice it. Performance is exactly the same and so are the problems :P.

I just fustrated in general about ati/amd's support of linux. I was going to purchase their product, now i'm going to have to find the right nvidia card for me, which will probably end up being the 7900gs or 8600gts, I just don't have much information to go off of right now linux wise.

I've switched to nvidia after many years of (mostly low-end) ATI radeons, and couldn't be more pleased.

- I have a GeForce 6800 GS on amd64 and it works very well for me.

i've never been displeased with nvidia. Its that I would like affordable mid range cards that will work well with linux. Perhaps that's too much to ask.
