gentoo mass production...
Is there a way to build a gentoo system, then backup the entire filesystem "mbr /boot and /", but have the filesystem autodetect hardware changes?

laptop1 running gentoo setup to autologin and run screen, etc "no X"
images created with partimage distro, really cool.
mbr backed up with dd bla bla bla
images and mbr loaded on laptop2 "has different ethernet, video, etc."

sometimes I can change /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and get the ethernet working, but not all of the time.

and on one of the archive recoveries, when screen is ran I get...
fork: Cannot allocate memory
Sorry, could not find a PTY.

Would this be possible with X?

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Other Things Gentoo.
Not an installation question, so moved here.

You can use dd to create images of entire harddisks if you want. Just make sure that the target is at least as big as the harddisk you're copying. If you build your system with no cpu specific optimisations you can the binaries on other systems too.
