I want to shrink an avi (or mpeg) to fit onto one DVD

The current mpeg file I have is 5.0gb, and is too big for a DVD.

I have an 800mb avi that I start from and with mencoder create the mpeg file (which is 5.0gb).

I need either split my movie, or shrink it so it is smaller than 4.0gb to fit on one dvd.

Any ideas?

Either re-encode at a lower bitrate/resolution or use a double-laver DVD.

How do I calculate what bitrate would be my max for a filesize to fit on dvd?

I read through the article already, did not find anything for splitting or creating multiple dvds.

It's literally the bit rate so knowing how long your recording is you can just do simple math to figure out the maximum bits per second you can have over the number of seconds your recording is and see if that will fit in four or so GB. Leave yourself some headroom for audio and the container overhead.

That's what I thought.

If I don't know the length is there anyway to get it besides playing the entire movie?

Given an AVI of 800mb, do I just calculate the number of bits/second that equals < 4.2 gb (dvd size)?

Found a cool calculator, but doesn't say much for non-dvd formats.

Well you don't have to play the whole movie but certainly opening it up it should start at 0:00:00/h:mm:ss in the status bar or somewhere and then you'd know and just close it. If you really don't want to open it at all, I think maybe tcprobe would tell you.

As for bit rate that's basically the idea but you want to leave room for audio and container overhead. Audio is easy to figure out if you know what audio bitrate you'll be encoding at, container overhead is a bit trickier so just leave a few dozen MB tops, I suppose. Also you are burning DVD format so I don't see why that calculator wouldn't work. There's nothing to calculate for your AVI, you can just look at the size (800 MB) and you know the length so you just do some division and you can get the overall bitrate. Video bitrate will be a bit lower because there's audio and container overhead, but like I said you don't really care about the bitrate of your current video file, you are just trying to figure out what DVD bitrate you need to get under 4.2 GB.
