My current cflags are as follows: Code: | CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mtune=970 -mcpu=970 -mabi=altivec"
CHOST="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu"
However the Gentoo Safe Cflags wiki says it should be different. Then again that listing is for a 64ul system. I would like to know if there would be any benefit in switching my cflags to -mcpu=g5 instead of my current setup.
Then again, I have been wondering if ppc64/64ul is as usable as 32ul. A couple of years ago when I started using Linux on ppc64 I started with a 64bit userland and found the number of usable packages limiting. Thus, I reinstalled my system using a 32bit userland instead.

As far as I know G5 and 970 are just aliases of each other. It should be fine as is. 64UL has come along quite well in the past few years, applications like Firefox are working now. :) Still, a 32UL is probably better for general desktop usage simply because a greater number of packages have been marked. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

Hmm, guess its better to leave it alone. Maybe on a slow day I'll rebuild my system to use a 64bit userland
Thanks! |
