I decided to give amaroK a go and... I'm pleasantly surprised. But I still got one question... Is it normal for it to take over 2 days to build a collection? So far I got around 3000 songs... and after 2 days of amaroK running (and sucking up 100% CPU) its collection lists 0 tracks and 46 artists. Doesn't sound quite right :?

Surely that's not a normal behavior. You should try to find out what happened...

Which formats is yr. music stored on?
Wrong permissions on those files/folders?
Check $HOME/.kde/share/apps/amarok/collection_scan.log

Oh... I just gave up on trying to make it build the collection by itself. I just added every single folder to the collection by hand and it worked like a charm (took me a couple hours tho...).

Permissions are fine, all my music on this box is 128kbps mp3's (laptop... don't need anything better on these speakers). Checking the log doesn't help any longer since it got overwritten when I built the collection. Thanks for the reply tho. :D

Can you explain what you mean with "by hand", as opposed to "by itself"? amaroK can't build a Collection without specifying the Collection folders.

I'm not sure what version of amarok you are using, but on the website, when looking at the changes for 1.3.3, it says:
Quote:
Patch fixing an almost-infinite directory-scanning problem while building the Collection
.

May or may not be related...

DB backend? None AFAICT.

Exactly... Collections -> configure -> check 1 folder (that has no subfolders inside cos... if I check 2 or more folder it all stops and goes on 100% CPU) and repeat the procedure for every single folder I want to add.

That sounds about right... using 1.3.2 tho. But since I "kinda" loved it... I'm not patching. Might help other people tho so... Thanx :D

USE flags (in case it matters)
Code:
emerge -pv amarok

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] media-sound/amarok-1.3.2-r1  -arts -debug +flac -gstreamer -kde -kdeenablefinal +mp3
+musicbrainz -mysql -noamazon +opengl -postgres +visualization +vorbis +xine -xinerama +xmms 0 kB

So I have similar problems with amarok 3.5.5. I used to have no backend database for the collection, and the collection scan would not get past 50% complete. So I thought I would try mysql backend since I already had mysql installed and working. I followed the mysql howto from http://amarok.kde.org/amarokwiki/index.php/MySQL_HowTo and now my collection goes to 95% but never past that. I've let it sit for hours. My cpu is at 50% while the building collection sits at 95%. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I've had untold trouble with amarok and the mysql DB backend ever since mysql went from 4 to 5. I need mysql 5 for another app, so installed postgresql and all 4 machines (using the same db) have no trouble now. The original symptoms were similar, never finishing a scan, auto rescans taking ages and far too much cpu etc.

yes, I have a similar problem, but Amarok freezes and Kopete freezes too.
In this momment I dont have DB support for Amarok, but I dont have a big collection, and all my collection is in only one directory.
I update version from 1.4.5-r1 to 1.4.6-r1, but this started my problems, then downgrade this to 1.4.5-r1 to solve it but it did not happen.
Here you have some info of my status:

Output of portage:

Code:
neobalam neoriddle # emerge -va amarok

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild     U ] media-sound/amarok-1.4.6-r1 [1.4.5-r1] USE="arts daap ifp ipod kde mp4%* mtp musicbrainz njb opengl python%* real visualization xinerama -debug -noamazon (-aac%*)" LINGUAS="es -af -ar -az -be% -bg -bn% -br -ca -cs -cy -da -de -el -en_GB -eo% -et -eu% -fa -fi -fr -ga -gl -he -hi -hu -id% -is -it -ja -km -ko -ku% -lo% -lt -mk% -ms -nb -nds% -nl -nn -pa -pl -pt -pt_BR -ro -ru -rw -se -sk -sl -sq -sr -sr@Latn -ss% -sv -ta -tg -th -tr -uk -uz -zh_CN -zh_TW (-ka%)" 0 kB

Total: 4 packages (1 upgrade, 3 new), Size of downloads: 8,742 kB

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No] no

Quitting.

neobalam neoriddle #

What can I do?
