Could it be another libexpat issue? (see https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-575655.html)

Of course it's expat issue. Login on the console, revdep-rebuild and voila - it should be happily working again.

so i did that - itshas been 3 days rebuilding everything and when i boot into KDE its still the same - no desktop icons, no R click menu. A slow interface which goes to a black screen after approx 15 secs
and also
Code:
tranent ~ # revdep-rebuild
-bash: revdep-rebuild: command not found
tranent ~ #

so had to re-emerge gentoolkit - but why did it 'disappear' ?

So even after revdep-rebuild it doesn't work? What do the logs say?

so Ive now tried to run revdep-rebuild again and it found nothing to do .
Starting on starting kdm I get the kde login screen and then my desktop background image and then the whole thing locks up - I cant ssh in and see whats going on.

hmmm not happy after waiting 3 days while it churned away to itself.

Maybe it's some other problem. Please check the logs (/var/log/kdm.log, /var/log/Xorg.(number).log).

Something is probably wrong with your 3D acceleration and/or video drivers. Can you try a most basic, failsafe setup: standard driver for your video card (open-source, not binary if possible), no dri, no possibly unstable things? Then try changing them one at a time to discover the root cause.

Does the problem disappear if you boot into previous kernel?

That means you made some other changes other than upgrading kernel. Do you remember what changes you made (and have backups in place)?

Did you mess up with AIGLX or related things?

Isn't your kde install corrupted or something?

IIRC I upgraded the kernel , and KDE didnt work when I booted into the new kernel, so I had a go at reconfiguring X with all the tools listed in the gentoo X-server guide.None of the X configs worked with KDE.
I emerged xfce ( didnt have it for the old kernel) and xfce seems OK.

revdep-rebuild found a whole load of expat.so broken linkages , so revdep-rebuild for 3 days to recompile 70-add packages.

and then KDE still didnt work

I suspect there is something that I need to update/reinstall that was messed with in the kernel upgrade that affects either X or kde .

and Ive tried a different video card (GeForce4 Mx440) and installed nvidia-drivers and have the same error in KDE but this lot in dmesg.

As it looks like the other video card is causing even more problems, let's continue with the former one.

Can you attach X log when xfce starts? We can get some clue by finding differences between that and the one with kde.

overnight I decided to re-emerge KDE and that seems to have fixed it .

Thanks for the help. It owuld have ben nice to kno what the problem was, but as tis machine is going to my parents ( to replace their win98 setup) I couldnt really afford to fiddle around.

Indeed very nice you solved it (don't forget now to change the title of this topic by editing the first post and appending [solved] to the title). It looks like it would be quite hard to tell exactly what caused the problem. Maybe revdep-rebuild didn't catch a problem (there is a known bug), or something else, possibly looking as unrelated...
