I have figured out part of the reason why I haven't been able to get wireless working. Despite the fact that my wireless card SAYS D-Link 520+, it is clearly acting like a D-Link 520. If I do lspci
Quote:
megini etc # lspci
00:12.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8180L 802.11b MAC (rev 20)

the card shows up as such. So I couldn't figure out how to install the native linux drivers, so I used ndiswrapper. (both drivers can be gotten from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=26&PFid=5&Level=6&Conn=5&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true)
with the XP driver but when I look for my router, I am getting a message about the driver's version being too high. What should I do about this? The wireless is definitely not up yet, whether I haven't entered enough commands, or what, but it IS showing up in ifconfig at least.
Here is the error I am talking about:

Quote:
megini etc # iwlist wlan0 scanning
Warning: Driver for device wlan0 has been compiled with version 22
of Wireless Extension, while this program supports up to version 20.
Some things may be broken...

wlan0 Scan completed :
Cell 01 - Address: 00:14:6C:1C:CD:A2
ESSID:"Switcher"
Protocol:IEEE 802.11b
Mode:Managed
Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
Quality:75/100 Signal level:-48 dBm Noise level:-96 dBm
Encryption key:off
Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s
24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s
Extra:bcn_int=100
Extra:atim=0

Is typing fconfig wlan0 up, then iwlist wlan0 scanning, then dhcpcd wlan0 (it goes back to the prompt quickly when I type this but doesn't return anything), enough to get the wireless running or am I forgetting something? Because if not, I think my problem lies in this version thing.
But I still can't help but think that something else is amiss, because if I type ndiswrapper -l, the output is such:
Quote:
net8180 : driver installed
device (10EC:8180) present
rtl8180.sys : invalid driver!

which doesn't seem quite right. I think I am on the right driver this time, because of what lspci told me and hte fact that wlan0 is showing up now, but this just doesn't seem quite right.
Can someone help me out here? I've been googling like mad and still can't seem to find what I'm looking for. iIf I still can't get this to work, I'm going to try to have to use the native linux driver, if I can ever figure out how to install it. >>

Do next:

Quote:
echo net-wireless/wireless-tools ~x86 > /etc/portage/package.keywords

and after that:

Quote:
emerge net-wireless/wireless-tools

Fire it up with iwlist [interface] scan!!!!!

I had same problem with that error message and this worked for me.
......newer version is still masked...

That took care of that problem, but ndiswrapper -l is still not outputting
Quote:
Installed ndis drivers

net8180 driver present, hardware present

It only says
Quote:
net8180 : driver installed
device (10EC:8180) present

Is this fine and just a new way of saying the same thing?
Because my wireless still isn't working and I'm trying to figure out why. If I take away the ethernet connection, I can't access any websites. I'm trying to find the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? It SEEMS like I have the right driver, doesn't it?

I'm almost thinking it's not correctly finding the access point. Would iwconfig wlan0 essid "routername" be enough to fix this? Or do I have to put in more?

PS: Looking on the back of the computer, both the power and activity lights for the card are on.

I just rebooted and it worked after I did iwconfig wlan0 on and dhcpcd wlan0! I added ndiswrapper to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6, but it didn't work until I did the iwconfig wlan0 thing. But I'm sure I can work that out easily enough. Now it's working! Thank you for you help with the suggesting of emerging the masked package! Thank you thank you thank you! (I'm so excited!)
