Twice in the last week my Gentoo box has rebooted on its own. It is not power related as my other two computers stay running. Both times I was not around so I wasn't actively doing anything on my computer and have no idea why it is rebooting on it's own.
Running top it showed that the computer was up for 4:37. Going back in time that put me at about 15 past 17:00. In fact looking at the times on the various log files (in /var/log) it appears that the computer came back up at 17:17. So I thought I would look for a log file for anything suspicious close to but prior to 17:17. At 17:12 there was a log called XFree86.0.log.old. What is this file? Why is it created? It appears to be a log of when XFree started. It doesn't make much sense to me to have XFree starting at 17:12 and then the rest of my system starting up at 17:17. XFree is one of the last things in the boot cycle. Again I wasn't around when Gentoo rebooted so I don't know what went on.
BTW I am running Metalog.
Do any of you have any suggestions on how to go about finding out why my Gentoo box is rebooting on its own? This is disturbing as I can't trust it as a server.

Are you using a vanilla kernel? If not, I'd try using one to see if that helps. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Thanks for the reply. After seeing your post I realized I was running Gentoo 2.4.20-r1. I went to r5 and my computer ran for 12 days without problems. Today the computer died altogether. The PSU went south. I was gone for the past week but my wife said she had heard strange noises coming from the computer while I was gone. Perhaps this was a PSU problem all along.
We will see. I have a new 400Watt (old one was 300W) PSU installed and 2.4.20-r5. I'll see how long it keeps going. If I still have random reboots then I will go to the vanilla kernel.
Has anyone seen random reboots while running the Gentoo kernel?
BTW compiling j2sdk put it over the edge! lol
