| I've installed Gentoo Linux 2007.0 on an reiserfs3.6 partition and now my hdd makes some clicks when it is under heavy use (before installing 2007.0 I didn't have this problem...used reiserfs3.5). The hdd is fine, I don't have any clicks in windows which is why I think reiserfs is at fault.[/b] |

This does not necessarily mean that the drive is fine. For example, the problem with the drive may only affect the ReiserFS partition. ReiserFS won't break your hard drive.
Get your drive to click and then see if dmesg has anything interesting. If you don't see errors, you probably shouldn't worry about it. If you do see errors, replace the drive. |

I don't either. Unless you notice a slowdown when the driver is clicking (as if it's trying to re-read or re-write data), I wouldn't worry about it. |

I don't see any slowdowns but in windows I don't hear the clicks... I'm starting to think it's not because of reiserfs, i get clicks when I open amarok and it refreshes the playlist but all the music is on an ntfs partition so I'm wondering if it's possible that the linux sata driver disables the hdd's silent mode so it can maximize performance.
P.S.: My motherboard is an Asus a7n8x-e deluxe (with an onboard sata chip SiI1112A). |
